KWAZULU NATAL KwaZulu Natal is the wettest and greenest province of South Africa, stretching from golden coastlines up to the Free State border, with the Drakensberg Mountain range forming the other border of the province in the West. It is indeed known as the green province, with it's lush vegetation, sugar farms and coastal regions. Down at the coast, it is a surfers paradise, although it can become quite humid, there is nothing like cooling off in the water. Even during winter time, it is hot enough to swim in the sea, which makes this an ideal holiday place, even during winter. GEOGRAPHICS Average temperatures vary a great deal over this province with the mountainous regions being considerably different from the low lying and coastal areas. The average temperature taken over all these areas would be about 17 degrees Celsius to 28 degrees Celsius in summer time and in winter time from about 11 degrees Celsius to 25 degrees Celsius . In areas such as Richards Bay, summer temperature can reach into well in the 30's. LAYOUT Kwa Zulu Natal is bordered by the Free State and Lesotho in the west, the Coastline on the east and Southern sides, and on the west by Mpumalanga, Swaziland and Mozambique. The province can be divided into three geographical regions, the lowlands region at the coast, two mountain ranges, the Drakensberg Mountains in the west and the Lebombo mountains in the far north as well as rolling plains in the central section of the province. The capital of KwaZulu Natal is Durban, with a variety of mixed culture and entertainment. This is a must experience as you come in contact with a different part of South Africa, with different cultures to the rest of the country. SURROUNDINGS Surrounding areas includes PieterMaritzburg, Port Shepstone, Richards Bay, New Castle and Escourt as well as Vryheid. There are many majestic and amazing natural landscapes and beauties to see in this province. TRAVEL INFORMATION Wear cool clothes!!! A short and t-shirt should be sufficient in the coastal and midland regions. Up in the mountains, be prepared for four seasons in one day! AIRPORTS There is one National airport in KwaZulu Natal, namely Durban's airport, from where you can catch a flight to either Cape Town or Johannesburg International. ATTRACTIONS The Greater St Lucia Wetlands consists of beautiful lakes, swamps, forests and marshlands. Most of the area is an estuary of lake St Lucia. It is one of the world heritage sites. Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park provides natural beauty with basaltic buttresses, golden sandstone, grasslands, steep sided river valleys and rocky mountainous areas. A must to see. The Sodwana Bay National Park is a narrow coastal strip of sand dunes, covered in forrest. Being an angler's paradise, this is a must see area, that you cannot leave out of your itinerary! The Hluhluwe Unfolozi Game Reserve is actually two combined game reserves and is specialising in saving the white rhino from extinction. Don't forget all the coastal regions where you can surf to your hearts content, do abseiling, wind surfing, skiing and so much more. Absolutely needed on your holiday! The Dolphin Coast which stretches from Umhlanga Rocks to the Tugela River is a must see. This area has the warm Indian ocean and is home to many dolphins. The Elephant Coast plays home to South Africa's largest herd of indigenous elephants and is situated on the north east side of KwaZulu Natal. |
