ROYAL NATAL NATIONAL PARK

The Royal Natal National Park is located in the Northwestern Corner of Kwa Zulu Natal. With a rugged wall of rock that drops for more than a kilometre from a plateau as old as Africa, it provides some of the most spectacular scenery in South Africa.

The Royal Natal National Park also includes the “Amphitheatre”, a sheer, 4km wide, cliff face where the waters of several rivers plunge into a landscape that has been exposed by erosion over many many years.

The Amphitheatre is flanked by by the distinctive Sentinel on the right hand side. On the left hand side, it is flanked by the Eastern Butress. It forms a magnificent backdrop to the 8800ha Royal Natal National Park.

The Park is known throughout the world for it's amazing scenery of the Drakensberg. Each year, many visitors flock to the park to view the amazing scenery. You can get closer to nature by taking a trip on horseback deep into the park to enjoy the magnificent bird life, natural scenery, vegetation and trout fishing.

The Royal Natal National Park also forms part of the Drakensberg range which stretches across the country from the Mpumalanga province right up to Kwa Zulu Natal. The cliffs of the Drakensberg are part of a crust of volcanic rock of the Gondwanaland Super Continent when Africa broke away from the massive piece of land. The cliff edge has systematically been pushed back by the rivers flowing through Natal, a process which is still on the go.

Some of the most breathtaking scenes of the Royal Natal National Park are the Tugela Falls, Protea, Sandstone cliffs, forested gorges and the rugged sentinel. If you don't visit this beautiful part of South Africa, you would be missing out on one of the best parts of your trip. Visiting the Royal Natal National Park is a must for every tourist coming to South Africa.

The accommodation at the Park includes either tented camping or chalets that one can hire to sleep in. Temperatures high in the mountains vary, but is on average between 25 – 35 during the summer months. In the winter, temperatures can go to zero or just below, with snow on the Drakensberg mountains. Despite the freezing cold in winter, it is still a popular destination for the adventurer seeking to see some beauty, rural life and a taste of nature. The Royal Natal National Park is a must see for any visitor to South Africa.
