THE KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

The Kruger National Park is one of the most prestigious and one of the greatest game reserves in the World. Located in Mpumalanga, South Africa, the Kruger National Park is visited by many people each year, from many different countries all over the world.

The Kruger National Park is home to the Big Five, and contains about 147 species of mammal, over 507 bird species and 114 reptile species, 49 fish species, and 34 species of amphibians. Tree species amount to about 336 different species, not to mention the plant species in this amazing national park. The park stretches over more than 2 million hectares. It is a world leader in advanced environmental management techniques and policies.

   

Throughout the lower parts of the park, traces of Bushman (San) cave rock paintings and archaeological sites like Thulamela and Masorini. This represents a great part of South African history and heritage, which is preserved along with some of Africa's most amazing animals.

Establishment
This Kruger National Park was established in 1898 to protect the wildlife of South Africa.The park has a significant number of species, bringing diversity and making it a world leader in environmental issues.

Destinations
Most of the Kruger National Park is self driven destinations, with it's huge amount of rest camps, waterholes, picnic sites and hides. To properly spend enough time in the Kruger National Park, at least four to five days are needed to take in all of the African beauty.

 

Rest Camps
Should you wish to spend a couple of days in the Kruger National Park, a significant number of rest camps are available, all unique to the experience. There are bush camps, luxury camps and just ordinary camps. Some of the camps in the game reserve includes Berg-en-dal, Lower Sabie, Skukuza, Satara, Olifants, Letaba, Mopani, Shingwedzi, Pretoriuskop, Punda Maria and Crocodile Bridge.

Facilities
Camps in the Kruger National Park ranges from the most primitive of accommodation sites, such as tents and primitive buildings, to the great and luxurious rest camps fully equipped with swimming pools and five star restaurants.

At most camps, petrol can be obtained, as well as the needed snacks for your journey further!

   

Temperatures
The Kruger National Park is situated in the Mpumalanga lowveld, which means that temperatures can get to the extreme from time to time. It is never cold, except in the winter nights. Average day temperatures during summer and winter months ranges from a minimum of 26 degrees celcius up to about a maximum of 32 degrees celcius. Winter nights can reach a minimum of 8 degrees celcius, where summer, spring and autumn reaches minimum temperatures between 16 and 20 degrees celcius.

Best Animal Viewing Times
The best viewing times to view the animals in the Kruger National Park are around dawn when most animals make their way to water holes, rivers and lakes to have their daily enjoyment of either washing themselves, wallowing in the mud or have their daily intake of fresh water.

During the heat of the day, most animals are hidden under trees and bushes as to avoid the lowveld heat. But not to worry, animals can again be seen during the cooler evening temperatures, around about sunset and dusk.

The Kruger National Park is a must see for any tourist to South Africa. Leaving South Africa without seeing the Kruger National Park is a tragedy, and you will miss much of the beauty and atmosphere of South Africa by not seeing the park.
