CAPE PENINSULA HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS The Cape Peninsula probably provides some of the most favorite holiday destinations in South Africa. Stretching from Fish Hoek right through to Cape Town, it is filled with beaches stretching about 30 km across, and is an area about 1000 m (square). The Cape Peninsula is like an island, surrounded by water on three sides, linking only to the mainland by the sandy, low lying Cape Flats. A ridge of high mountains separates the Peninsula from the sea closer to Cape Town. Cape Point is generally known to many people as the place where the two oceans meet, the Atlantic and the Indian oceans. Many people dispute this though, and insists that the two oceans meets at Cape L'Agulhas. Both are true actually, the oceans do meet in the Western Cape, but the place depends on the wind that's blowing. Sometimes, the cold and warm currents can be felt in Cape L'Agulhas, and other times, the two currents can be felt at Cape Point. It is also known for it's gentle water, sandy bays, flat and gradual slopes that leads into the ocean. A favorite holiday place to be, a lot of South African's favorite holiday destination. During the month's of November through to mid January, most South African's visit the Peninsula, creating a crowded holiday vibe, filled with excitement in the air. Towards the west of the Cape Peninsula, the water is freezing, and only a five minute swim can be taken by the bravest of adventurers. Being the cold water of the Atlantic ocean, Camps Bay beach is mainly used for sunbathing, sports events and a relaxing day on the sand. The further east one moves in the Peninsula, the warmer the water becomes. The best area for swimming in the Cape Peninsula is at Fish Hoek, where the water is calm and peaceful and even though cold, a lot warmer than Camps Bay or Clifton. It is also one of a great many popular swimming destinations in the Cape. Swimming can also be done at Muizenberg, but is slightly on the dangerous side as the beach is generally deserted. It is generally very windy in the Cape Peninsula, due to the fresh breeze blowing in from the ocean. Right next to the Peninsula are some of the most popular swimming destinations in South Africa, also known as False Bay. The Cape Peninsula is filled with towns telling the history of South Africa, from the fishery that was started in Fish Hoek in the 1800's when the town was a little fishing village, to the historical happenings in Hout Bay, which has seen two wars. Simons town holds something for the Navy enthusiast, including the statue of Just Nuisance, the famous loving dog who provided much joy to the Naval officers in years gone by. Should you be interested in buying fresh fish straight from the sea, Fish Hoek has a fish market where the fish can be bought straight from the fishing boat. Along Camps Bay are lots of luxury homes and accommodation venues, for the more exclusive population who prefers luxury to Cape culture. Indeed, the Peninsula is a must visit, filled with restaurants, beaches, shopping centers, historical towns and much much more. It truly brings the Cape to life. |
