TRAVEL TO STELLENBOSCH The historical town of Stellenbosch is located about 35 km's outside of Cape Town, and forms part of the famous Cape Winelands. It is a very convenient holiday accommodation venue, where visitors are in the middle of the rich Cape Winelands, but also close enough to Cape Town and the beach, which is about 20km's away. Situated in an ideal location, many visitors staying in Stellenbosch have quick access to many great activities and places to see. Stellenbosch is a center of tourism in the western cape, and the visit to the Cape would not be complete without you traveling to Stellenbosh to see this historical place. The historical town of Sellenbosch was named after Simon van der Stel, govenor of the Dutch settlement in the Cape during the 1670's. Simon van der Stel also discovered the Eerste River Valley, where Stellenbosh is situated. Stellenbosch tourism does not only provide insight into a rich historical value in South Africa, it brings a student vibe, as the famous Stellenbosch university is located in the heart of the town. During the year, Stellenbosh is filled with students studying at one of the country's best universities. In the evenings, the cafe's and restaurants, theatres and dance halls are filled with the sound of young people, as the town comes to life when students are done with the day's studying. When you travel to Stellenbosch, you will get a hint of student life and catch the vibe, wishing you were a student once again. It is known throughout South Africa, as the “studente dorp”, or literally translated, “student town”. The town of Stellenbosch provides many attractions to the tourist, such as an ancient General dealer, called “Oom Samie se Winkel” where practically anything can be bought, just as in years gone by when general dealers were the only form of shop in town. There are also many other attractions in town that you have to see when you travel to Stellenbosch, such as the Libertas Parva which houses the Rembrandt van Rijn art collection, the Stellenryck Wine Museum as well as a rich collection of more historical buildings. Amongst these are the Krige Cottages built in typical Cape Dutch style, the Vrederust, which was an old farmhouse that has been converted into a restaurant, La Gratitude, the original Lutheren Church which now houses the Stellenbosch Art Museum and the Kolonies Huis where the magistrate is located. There are many other amazing buildings that has to be visited when you travel to Stellenbosch, such as the Village Museum, the Schreuderhuis (oldest historical building in South Africa), several very old and historical buildings, as well as all the old streets. The main street in Stellenbosch has been lined with huge oak trees, providing shade as far as the eye can see. The oak trees in the town is another landmark of Stellenbosh. You know that you are in Stellenbosch when you see streets lined with huge, ancient oak trees, planted many many years ago. Stellenbosch tourism brings you into contact with the start of the Wine Route of the Cape, where you can travel from town to town, visiting wine farms, and tasting the wonderful Cape Wine, unique to South Africa. Some well known vineyards around Stellenbosch includes Nederburg, Vergelegen, Libertas, Fleur de Cap, Boschendal and many more. Stellenbosh provides many accommodation venues where tourists and guests can overnight or spend a holiday. It has the typical Western Cape climate, wonderful on a hot summers day in December.
